PHOTO SHOOT FOR PLUS SIZE BRIDAL GOWNS

Spencer getting all dolled up!

Many people ask, “What goes into a photo shoot for plus size bridal gowns?” We’re here to tell the good and bad! Being a start-up, having 30 custom made full figured wedding dresses, a 10hr shoot, with a full crew, is no small task. This was very apparent for our premiere Spring 2013 photo shoot. Hopefully you can learn from our mistakes!

Ironing a wedding dress

REAL SIZE BRIDE is one of the leading plus size wedding dress designers. In such, all the designs are exclusive, we are not reselling other designers items. So the first step to creating REAL SIZE BRIDES Spring 2013 Collection of plus size bridal gowns was to design the gowns.

Steaming plus size bridal gowns

REAL SIZE BRIDES goal is to revolutionize the way wedding dresses for curvy women are designed, so we focused on offering sexy short wedding dresses, not typically available by other plus size wedding dress designers. We launched with 2 collections: the City of Lights Collection features edgier, sexier, more avant-garde dresses, while the Jardin de Vie Collection offers more traditional, regal styles such as plus size ball gowns, and the traditional A Line wedding dress.

Racks of plus size bridal gowns

2 collections meant 2 models. REAL SIZE BRIDE loves diversity, so wanted 2 completely different looking models. We found our models, hair stylist, and makeup artist though Model Mayhem. Word of advice: a pretty face does not indicate a good model. Make sure you get detailed information regarding the model’s ability to shoot. Ask questions like, “How will you pose in this dress?” “How well do you take direction?” “What is the longest shoot you’ve done?” Sounds simple, but we often overlook basic questions because we overestimate people’s abilities’ based upon their enthusiasm.

Marva getting ready!!!

Day of the shoot! Photographer does not have keys to the studio! We are locked out for an hour and 45mins! Hair and makeup are delayed. There are 30 dresses to shoot. Clock is ticking. Thankfully we had amazing assistants to iron the plus size bridal gowns, create set designs, act as modeling coaches, and a diligent hair/makeup artist always on set. Everyone was frustrated, stressed and annoyed. Coordinating schedules for so many people is challenging. If all REAL SIZE BRIDES full figured wedding dresses did not get shot that day, who knew when we could all meet up again?

Reviewing images of the photo shoot

Originally, we shot the plus size bridal gowns to be displayed as the product catalog images on our website. We were supposed to have an outdoor shoot, for the homepage pictures, never happened. REAL SIZE BRIDE hired another model in San Francisco to do it.

What did REAL SIZE BRIDE learn? Hire the right people! This cannot be emphasized enough! Just because someone is “nice” doesn’t mean they can produce results, work under stress, or take accountability for their actions. Deadlines can cause you to not think as clearly and as patiently as you should.

PLUS SIZE BRIDES SURVIVAL GUIDE

Plus size brides are well known from their assets. These brides to be represent the BBW: bust, booty and waist! In such, finding the right wedding dress can be a challenge: ensuring your girls stay in place and the dress is cut well to fit your voluptuous curves. On top of the battle of finding plus size wedding dresses, once you get the gown of your dreams, making sure it stays put is a whole other obstacle!

REAL SIZE BRIDE is giving our busty, buxom, voluptuous plus size brides a survival guide to making sure no Janet Jackson Superbowl moments occur on your fabulous wedding day.

BUSTY BRIDES TO BE

Strapless Bra

Plus size bustier

Most plus size brides are not dealing with D’s…usually we’re talking DD, DDD, F and G. There is serious cleavage going on and, even though your hubby-to-be can handle them, many plus size wedding dresses can’t.

Strapless wedding dresses are by far the most popular type of cut on the market. They are aesthetically pleasing and sexy. However, most plus size wedding dresses do not come with thick boning in the bodice to support large busts. Typically they are flimsy, and not designed to be a support mechanism. This is where backless strapless, bustier and torsolette bras come in handy. Even if wearing a bra is not ideal, WEAR ONE, this is the only way to prevent “peek-a-boo” moments. We’re sure grandma would not approve otherwise!

Also if having a strapless wedding gown is a necessity, purchase the most supportive one. Avoid plunging sweethearts or sweetheart wedding dresses as they reveal the most cleavage, and most accidents likely to occur. Sticking with a straight strapless wedding dress, ensures the most support as it is closest to your skin and not allowing extra cleavage to sneak by.

The type of wedding dress fabric is also pertinent in making your decision. Chiffon, tulle and organza wedding dresses are the lightest, most translucent fabrics so getting any type of boning in the bust or wires in the cups are nearly impossible. Plus size brides should try sticking to satin, taffeta, or lace wedding dresses which give the most supportive, structured feel. Since these materials are thicker and less stretchy than the former, they can easily have cups or boning added to the bust.

Double sided tape is also a plus size brides best friend on her wedding day. If you cannot pass up that plunging sweetheart neckline dress, and you are a buxom beauty PLEASE use double-sided tape! A few strips on each breast will last a night full of dancing, kissing and hugging. The tape is so strong it normally will hold even when you perspire. This actually helps make the removal process less painful as its strength decreases throughout the night.

PLUS SIZE WEDDING DRESSES

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life…your wedding dress is THE most important gown you will EVER wear. In today’s world of online shopping, there are a few facts you need to know before ordering plus size wedding dresses online in order to avoid scams and fake designer products.

PLUS SIZE WEDDING DRESSES ONLINE

The only MAJOR plus size wedding dress designer that sells online is David’s Bridal, no exceptions. All of the big designers: Vera Wang, Justin Alexander, Alfred Angelo, ect EXCLUSIVELY sell in retailer stores. Retailers will lose their licensing agreement IF they advertise prices online. Major wedding dress designers all want to maintain price integrity and avoid market cannibalization, so NO wedding designer will advertise their gowns online for purchase. Instead they will advise of the location of the retail stores that carry their line. Typically, retailers cannot give prices over the phone! It’s their way of getting you to the store. Do the research and see for yourself!

Plus Size Wedding Dresses

There are MANY knockoff sites out there BEWARE! If you see plus size wedding dresses online at 80% off, use your head, if it sounds too good to be true, it is. You can find MANY plus size wedding dresses for $200 online, but the quality will be very poor. Remember, the key is no MAJOR wedding gown designer advertises prices online, except exclusive e-commerce sites like www.realsizebride.com or similar independent designers. This will change in the coming years as everything is streamlined online and more businesses understand the advantages of having an e-commerce presence.

AFFORDABLE PRICING

Back to the $200 “designer” plus size wedding dresses…if its advertised as cheap, that’s because it is! Nothing wrong with being a bride on a budget, just be aware the wedding dress you are purchasing will not look as nice as the picture. In fact, the pictures on many knockoff sites are the exact same ones pulled off the designer’s site! Don’t for a second believe the $2,000 “designer” plus size wedding dresses advertised for $200 are the real deal. In actuality, you are getting a low quality, imitation product.

WEDDING DRESS FABRICS

Before purchasing plus size wedding dresses online, familiarize yourself with different fabrics. Lace sounds fancy…but have you FELT the difference between Chantilly lace, and cheap lace? Go try gowns on at a store, or at least touch them and ask questions. When you see a wedding dress you LOVE, find out what material it’s made of. Plus size wedding dresses that cost $10,000 aren’t just expensive because of the designer label, rather there is a significant quality grade used verses a $3000 dress or even a $1000 dress.

BUDGET BRIDE

It’s smart to have a budget, especially since the dress will only be worn once. Don’t break the bank buying plus size wedding dresses, rather just use caution when purchasing online. Remember the average cost of a wedding gown is roughly $1500. Use this as a benchmark. Its okay to go higher or lower, just know too low may get you something disappointing, can potentially waste time, and not be refundable.

PLUS SIZE BRIDE…FOR A DAY, MARVA’S WAY!

PLUS SIZE BRIDE, FOR A DAY

With large thighs, big bosoms, and a bottom to match, shopping for full figured wedding dresses typically doesn’t provide any plus size bride the mindset of a pleasant and enjoyable experience. In fact, the main concern is being dressed in a white curtain with glitter and beads on it. Or worse, holding your breath as a dress 2-3 sizes too small, is forced over your head and up your thighs. Fears creep in of breathing and something pops and you end up paying for a plus size bridal gown you don’t really want.

Without the “right” body, shopping for full figured wedding dresses could be intimidating, scary and disappointing. Mainly, because on you, it looks nothing like it did on the size 2 model in the most recent issue of Brides Magazine. It’s easy to get your hopes up and think “I will look like her,” but when the dress doesn’t zip up the smile turns to a frown. Sounds like fun…

WEDDING DRESSES FOR CURVY WOMEN

Well that’s where REAL SIZE BRIDE came in! They have the intention of changing all of that. When I was first approached to become a model for REAL SIZE BRIDE I had feelings of excitement and trepidation (see above scenario). It is very rare to see formal wear, let alone wedding dresses, that are catered specifically to plus size brides, so you can imagine how excited I was to be a part of this movement!

As a plus size model, I am approached to be a part of a lot of projects, working with REAL SIZE BRIDE has been one of my favorites just knowing the positive, life changing experience that will be afforded to every bride to be who wears one of their wedding dresses down the aisle. Its good to know there is a company that cares for us and wants us to look just as good—no BETTER—than everyone else on our wedding day!

Why RSB only Sells Wedding Dresses For Curvy Women

Wedding dresses for curvy women

Wedding dresses for curvy women

REAL SIZE BRIDE did not initially form with the intent to be one of the top plus size wedding dress designers and exclusively cater ONLY to women size 10-30. Rather, when the concept to form a business initially conceptualized, we were going to sell worn once wedding dresses in a retail store! Full figured wedding dresses were the furthest thing from our mind. But that was back in 2010 when forming a business was just a thought, much exploration and research was needed.

plus size wedding dress designers

We had gone to many retail stores in the Chicago land area to determine just how lucrative and worthwhile opening up a brick and mortar store was. While saving start up capital, and really understanding all nuances of what goes into a retail store, we knew we HAD TO be different! There are SO MANY wedding dress stores; we needed to differentiate our brand if we wanted to revolutionize the wedding gown industry.

After much debate, we decided operating exclusively on an online platform was the best way to reduce costs, and reach the largest audience possible. But once again, everyone is online, REAL SIZE BRIDE needed to be different. After talking to many women, the thought of selling only wedding dresses for curvy women was really appealing. Many plus size women begged us to do it, since most retail stores don’t stock their size, and they don’t feel equally represented in the wedding gown industry. The amount of plus size wedding dress designers are so slim; the industry is completely under-served, so REAL SIZE BRIDE formed its mission to satisfy this niche exclusively.

Short sexy wedding dresses

Short sexy wedding dresses

From our research most full figured wedding dresses are very unflattering. A Line, and empire waist wedding dresses dominate the market. These styles are so unflattering, and do not accentuate a curvy woman’s figure. REAL SIZE BRIDE decided its time to offer sexy short wedding dresses, mermaid wedding dresses, and dresses with high slits.

Why not offer the same styles to plus size women that are available to slender women? Every woman wants to feel the glitz and glam on her wedding day. Every woman deserves to be the center of attention, and why, because she’s plus size, must she sacrifice a sexy wedding gown?

Full figured wedding dresses

REAL SIZE BRIDE exclusively designed wedding dresses for curvy women that were form flattering, feel sexy, and make you proud of your curves. We know, sexy styles aren’t for everyone so we launched with 2 collections: Jardin de Vie, for the more traditional, conservative bride, and the City Lights Collection for the more daring bride who want to flaunt her curvy physique.

We hope we are able to provide high fashion wedding dresses for curvy women all across the world and truly revolutionize the way plus size wedding dresses are designed. If your husband put a ring on your finger he clearly found something in you. There’s no reason size should limit the type of wedding dress style options available.

What’s better: PLUS SIZE BRIDE or CURVY GIRL BRIDAL?

In today’s politically correct obsessed world, it’s impossible to have the “right” term to define a brides body type. Everyone has his or her say so. REAL SIZE BRIDE wanted to provide you with the latest facts on the controversial topic.

The most common term, according to Google, is plus size bride. Do women really like being called plus size? Or is it rather a term that is commonly accepted? The average American woman is a size 14. If a 14 is the AVERAGE SIZE, is plus size average size?

Many women are proud to be plus size brides, since the “plus” just means more to love. Some of the largest retailers: Lane Bryant, David’s Bridal and Torrid make a fortune catering exclusively to, and marketing to plus size women.

Plus size is a common word, easy to navigate in search engines or appeal to a mass audience without much guessing what they are targeting. Plus size is by far the most common term, but does that make it politically correct?

REAL SIZE BRIDE infers most plus size brides refer themselves as plus size for lack of better term. However, the curvy revolution is in full swing, and presents a nicer connotation. More ladies are proud of their chests and booty’s, and prefer the term curvy.

Plus Size Bride

Marilyn Monroe

More and more models and average women consider themselves curvy, not plus size. Describing yourself as curvy tends to be more flattering, uplifting and flirty. Curvy just sounds sexy and intriguing! Curvy girls bridal is also more fun then the latter plus size bride.

Full figured is also a very popular term. Full figured wedding dresses could be seen as more outdated. Marilyn Monroe was the quintessential full figured model, and bombshell. Nothing wrong looking like her, and full figured is making a comeback.

Plus Size Wedding Dresses

OK, OK, so if you know me, you know I am not a bride to be. However that doesn’t mean I don’t love plus size bridal fashion! Not to mention, at my current age, many of my girlfriends are getting married, so that means lots and lots of discussions about what wedding gown they are thinking about wearing!

Now, if you wear a dress size smaller then a US Size 14, finding a wedding dress is still a serious matter, but just about every wedding dress retailer will have something, in your size. However, when you wear a dress over a US 16/18, finding a dress that simply fits, can be a chore. Sadly the amount of plus size wedding dress designers is still marginal but slowly things are making a upswing. Companies such as REAL SIZE BRIDE are an exclusive plus size wedding dress designer and cater to full figure brides.
