Many people ask, “What goes into a photo shoot for plus size bridal gowns?” We’re here to tell the good and bad! Being a start-up, having 30 custom made full figured wedding dresses, a 10hr shoot, with a full crew, is no small task. This was very apparent for our premiere Spring 2013 photo shoot. Hopefully you can learn from our mistakes!
REAL SIZE BRIDE is one of the leading plus size wedding dress designers. In such, all the designs are exclusive, we are not reselling other designers items. So the first step to creating REAL SIZE BRIDES Spring 2013 Collection of plus size bridal gowns was to design the gowns.
REAL SIZE BRIDES goal is to revolutionize the way wedding dresses for curvy women are designed, so we focused on offering sexy short wedding dresses, not typically available by other plus size wedding dress designers. We launched with 2 collections: the City of Lights Collection features edgier, sexier, more avant-garde dresses, while the Jardin de Vie Collection offers more traditional, regal styles such as plus size ball gowns, and the traditional A Line wedding dress.
2 collections meant 2 models. REAL SIZE BRIDE loves diversity, so wanted 2 completely different looking models. We found our models, hair stylist, and makeup artist though Model Mayhem. Word of advice: a pretty face does not indicate a good model. Make sure you get detailed information regarding the model’s ability to shoot. Ask questions like, “How will you pose in this dress?” “How well do you take direction?” “What is the longest shoot you’ve done?” Sounds simple, but we often overlook basic questions because we overestimate people’s abilities’ based upon their enthusiasm.
Day of the shoot! Photographer does not have keys to the studio! We are locked out for an hour and 45mins! Hair and makeup are delayed. There are 30 dresses to shoot. Clock is ticking. Thankfully we had amazing assistants to iron the plus size bridal gowns, create set designs, act as modeling coaches, and a diligent hair/makeup artist always on set. Everyone was frustrated, stressed and annoyed. Coordinating schedules for so many people is challenging. If all REAL SIZE BRIDES full figured wedding dresses did not get shot that day, who knew when we could all meet up again?
Originally, we shot the plus size bridal gowns to be displayed as the product catalog images on our website. We were supposed to have an outdoor shoot, for the homepage pictures, never happened. REAL SIZE BRIDE hired another model in San Francisco to do it.
What did REAL SIZE BRIDE learn? Hire the right people! This cannot be emphasized enough! Just because someone is “nice” doesn’t mean they can produce results, work under stress, or take accountability for their actions. Deadlines can cause you to not think as clearly and as patiently as you should.
